The violent crime rate in the United States increased by about 5% in 2020. This increase was driven by a 29% increase in the number of homicides, the largest increase on record. However, not all forms of criminal violence have increased over the past year. Using data from the 2020 FBI Uniform Crime Report, 24/7 Wall St. identified the city with the most thefts in each state. Cities are ranked according to their theft rate, specifically the number of reported thefts per 100,000 inhabitants. Only places with populations between 2,500 and 25,000 were considered. In Hawaii, no eligible city had crime data.
Although each of the cities on this list ranks as having the highest theft rate in their respective state, the theft rates in these locations vary widely, from 27.2 incidents per 100,000 population to 579.3 per 100,000. Yet in every city on this list, robbery rates exceed the state rate. The theft rate nationwide is 73.9 per 100,000.
Robbery is one of the four broad categories of violent crime – along with aggravated assault, rape, and homicide – and the vast majority of cities on this list also have a higher overall violent crime rate than the United States. State as a whole.
