The city where crime is skyrocketing in every state – 24/7 Wall St.

Special report

In the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the violent crime rate in the United States hit its highest level in a decade. The increase is driven by a rise in aggravated assaults and, most notably, a historic 29% increase in homicides that made 2020 the deadliest year in the United States since the mid-1990s.

Violent crime is a broad category of offenses that includes rape, robbery, aggravated assault and murder. In total, more than 1.3 million violent crimes were reported in the United States – or 399 per 100,000 people – in 2020, an increase of 18 incidents per 100,000 people from the previous year.

However, the increase in violent crime has not been uniform across the country. In the vast majority of states, there is at least one city where the increase in criminal violence has exceeded the national increase.

Using data from the FBI’s 2020 Uniform Crime Report, 24/7 Wall St. identified the city in each state with the fastest growing crime. Cities are ranked by year-over-year change in reported violent crime per 100,000 population. Only places with between 2,500 and 25,000 inhabitants were taken into account.

The outbreaks of violence in US cities have come in a tumultuous year. The COVID-19 pandemic has closed schools and left millions of Americans jobless. Footage of the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer has shaken faith in US law enforcement and sparked nationwide protests. Gun sales have skyrocketed and millions of new guns have proliferated in communities across the country. Here’s a look at the states that buy the most guns.

It is important to note that in Maryland, no city for which data is available reported an increase in violent crime. Additionally, in four other states – Alabama, Georgia, Hawaii and Pennsylvania – there were no eligible cities with available crime data. All but eight cities on this list have higher violent crime rates than the comparable statewide rate, and most have higher violent crime rates than the United States as a whole.
