Rep. Snyder to Serve on New State Broadband Development Authority | Community News

State Representative Pam Snyder, D-Jefferson, has been nominated to serve on the new Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority.

Snyder was a lead co-sponsor of House Bill 2071, now known as Bill 96 of 2021, which was signed by Governor Tom Wolf in December after unanimously passing both houses of the General Assembly. Law created authority.

House Minority Leader Representative Joanna McClinton told Dennis Davin, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, on Jan. 19 that she had nominated Snyder to serve on the 11-member council.

Snyder said she was thrilled to hear the news.

“I have been an advocate on the issue of expanding broadband access across the state since being elected in 2012. I have participated in countless hearings, meetings and conversations on the subject. The lack of accessible broadband, especially in rural areas, is something that directly affects me and the communities I represent,” she said in a statement released by her office.

“That’s why I sponsored the legislation to create the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority. I am pleased to now serve on the board of directors that my legislation created so that I can continue my mission to ensure that every resident of Pennsylvania, regardless of where they live, has equal access to broadband.

“I would like to thank my colleagues in the House for unanimously passing this legislation, Chief McClinton for the nomination and the minority chairman of the House Consumer Affairs Committee, Rob Matzie, for his continued efforts on the expansion of broadband and the creation of the Authority,” she continued.

The Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority is responsible for creating a statewide broadband plan and distributing grants for broadband expansion projects in underserved areas of the Commonwealth. It is the first official broadband entity in the history of the state.
