SALEF has supported law enforcement in southern Arizona since 2003. The nonprofit helps raise funds for equipment and other needs that fall outside the police department’s annual budget. de Marana and other law enforcement agencies in the Tucson area.
SALEF Executive Director Bonnie Faircloth was involved in planning and organizing this weekend’s poker run.
“We organized this event to help organize and fundraise for law enforcement for essential rescue equipment and training opportunities for our partner agencies if they need it,” said Faircloth. “If one of them needs something that their budget does not cover, we intervene if it corresponds to SALEF’s mission and we help them. “
Funds can also be used to support and develop partnerships and programs that engage with the local community. The goal is to help support public safety by working with the county and other local jurisdictions to resolve funding issues when they arise unexpectedly. SALEF has a dedicated volunteer board that works to organize several events each year.
Lt. Tim Brunenkant of the Marana Police Department, a 26-year veteran of the city force, serves as a liaison with SALEF.
“When the Marana Police Department joined SALEF in 2017, we knew we wanted to have a different fundraising event,” Brunenkant said. “One thing we realized was that a Poker Run hadn’t been done. We did the first one that year and have been doing it ever since.
Vehicle check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. on the day of travel and the trip begins at 8:30 a.m.
