Nogales sewer pipe to receive life-saving repair | Government and politics

A cement lined manhole leading to the sewage sewer line marks the spot where the sewage pipe was sheared below the surface and leaked into Portrero Creek north of Nogales, Arizona, on August 1, 2017. Pipes running horizontally along the shore are part of a diversion system built to divert sewage upstream around the break and to the Rio Rico Wastewater Treatment Plant.

A sewer leak leaked more than 600,000 gallons of sewage near the town of Nogales, Arizona for eight days in the summer of 2017.

It wasn’t the first or the last time, but it was the most significant indicator of the condition of the sewer line. Sewage leaks are common in Nogales, and they bring with them the rancid smell of sewage throughout the city.

“From City Hall to the border, which is about a mile and a half or 2 miles, the smell is so bad,” Nogales Mayor Arturo Garino said of the sewer pipe running through the heart of downtown. “We’re standing right here by the factory, and it doesn’t smell like it smells [in Nogales].”

This 9-mile sewer pipe that begins in Nogales, Sonora and runs through Nogales, Arizona to the Rio Rico plant will finally be repaired, marked by a groundbreaking ceremony late last month at the international plant. wastewater treatment plant in Nogales. But some say the much-needed repair of the International Outfall Interceptor, also known as IOI, doesn’t go far enough to fix the long-running issues.

After years of planning, the city of Nogales secured $38 million in funding for sewer line repairs. Since 2010, Congress has annually appropriated funds to rehabilitate the IOI totaling $34.2 million. Approximately $1.36 million in cost was shared with Mexico, and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality provided funding of $2.59 million. In addition, $1 million came from Freeport-McMoRan Inc., an American mining company founded in Phoenix.
