Greg Hansen: Bowl cancellations are a blow to the community and schools involved | Greg hansen

With the uncertain future in a world rocked by a pandemic, now would be a good time for the NCAA to change the end-of-season training rules for 5-7 teams.

The Arizona Bowl will continue with Thursday’s Arizona Scramble Golf event at LaPaloma, a fundraising event that is now part of the game’s $ 4.5 million donation to local charities since the game’s inception, 2015. On Friday, the Taco Bell Downtown Bowl Bash will be held as scheduled.

A little rain may seem inconsequential after what Farhang, Adair and their crew have been through.

Much like the Fenway Bowl, the Military Bowl, the Holiday Bowl and the Hawaii Bowl, the Arizona Bowl will be the source of tens of thousands of dollars spent preparing for one of the “little” bowl games, sometimes. lost among the vast program of more than 40 college football balls.

But it is misleading. There is no such thing as a “small” game of boules.

One hundred years ago this week, on December 26, 1921, Arizona played its first bowl game: the East-West Christmas Classic in San Diego. The match was played in a rainstorm at Balboa Stadium; Arizona lost 38-0 to undefeated Center College Praying Colonels of Kentucky.

Now, 100 years later, that bowl game has been remembered for posterity at Arizona Stadium, inscribed on a 90-yard frontage along the eastern stands, on par with the memorable victory of the UA in the 1998 Holiday Bowl over Nebraska and a powerful victory over Miami in the Fiesta Bowl on New Years Day in 1994.
