Gilbert is seeking donations and volunteers for the heat relief program

The Town of Gilbert is looking for local businesses and individuals to donate water and other non-perishable heat-related items to the ongoing program Heat donation program.

According to Arizona Department of Health Services, nearly 3,000 Arizona residents visit the emergency room each year due to heat-related illnesses. These diseases often become fatal. In fact, Maricopa County had 338 heat-related deaths Last year.

To remedy this, Gilbert joined forces with the Maricopa Association of Governments provide resources for people at increased risk of heat-related illnesses, including the homeless, the elderly and the young.

The city is ask for donations bottled water, hats, light colored T-shirts and sunscreen.

The program started on May 28 and will accept donations until September 6.

Gilbert is also looking for volunteers to help with heat rescue teams. Duties will include distributing hydration and snacks to those visiting the Salvation Army to Chandler looking for help. Volunteers can also deliver hydration kits to people outside, such as bus stops and parks.

They are looking for adults, seniors and groups to help but do not ask for young children.
