Expect cooler weather on Mother’s Day, but a triple-digit Saturday

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) – We had another day with above average temperatures around Arizona, and we expect that trend to continue through Saturday. The average high this time of year is around 91 for Phoenix, and we’ve been way above that. Even the mountains are experiencing much warmer temperatures than usual for this time of year. However, we are looking for a significant change on Saturday as winds pick up across the state.

As a ridge of high pressure moves away from Arizona in the upper atmosphere, it is replaced by a broad area of low pressure that will send multiple storm pulses primarily north of Arizona. The result of this will be increased winds Saturday and Sunday across the state with red flag warnings for much of northern and eastern Arizona. In a real sense, fire danger will be high across the state throughout the weekend.

For Saturday, expect breezes to pick up in the afternoon, and once again we will be flirting with 100 degrees. However, by Sunday another blustery day will be on the way with cooler air moving into the state. This will bring the Phoenix Metro highs back to the mid-90s. For much of the next week, look for highs around 90 degrees, plus or minus a degree or two.
