COVID-19 and weather cancel more NCAA Division I fixtures

Weather and COVID-19 continue to wreak havoc on the NCAA swimming and diving schedule with at least five more meets canceled.

Winter storm Jasper is expected to bring snow to many South and Mid-Atlantic regions of the country through the end of the week and over the weekend. The storm also brings potential ice that could lead to power loss and tree damage. Much of the Carolinas is most likely to experience the storm’s worst effects, including ice.

In addition to weather cancellation meetings, COVID-19 cases are still high across the country as the omicron variant continues to show dominance.

Some parts of the country, like the northeast, are seeing a slight drop in cases from previous weeks while other parts of the country, like the west, are seeing an increase in cases. Cases are currently at 253 per 100,000 people in the west compared to 192 per 100,000 people in the northeast. In addition to COVID-19, winter weather conditions are also impacting college swimming competitions.

Georgia Tech and Queens

The meeting between Division I at Georgia Tech University and Division II Central at Queens University scheduled for Friday, January 21 has been canceled due to “Queens University Weather and Travel Issues. The meeting was to take place at Georgia Tech.

Queens is located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Charlotte has the potential for snow Friday. Georgia Tech announced that they plan to hold an intra-squad meet instead.

This is Queens’ first cancellation of the season. Georgia Tech has had its scheduled Jan. 8 meet at Auburn canceled due to COVID-19.

ECU and South Georgia

The ECU and Georgia Southern meeting scheduled for Saturday January 22 at the ECU has been cancelled”due to winter weather forecasts and anticipated hazardous travel conditions. The meet was supposed to be a senior day for ECU, and the meet will not be rescheduled.

Greenville, North Carolina, where ECU is located, has a winter storm warning in effect from 12:00 a.m. EST Friday through 7:00 a.m. EST Saturday.

This is ECU’s first game cancellation of the season. Georgia Southern had its scheduled January 15 meeting against Campbell and SCAD canceled due to COVID-19.

Utah and Washington State

The Utah and Washington state women-only meet scheduled for Friday, Jan. 21, has been canceled “due to COVID health and safety protocols under the Washington State program.” The meeting was to take place in Utah and will not be postponed.

Utah had its scheduled meetings last weekend against Arizona and Arizona State canceled due to COVID-19 on their own schedule. Washington State had also scheduled its meetup last weekend, the PNW Invite, due to COVID-19 in its own schedule.

BYU and Washington State

In addition to the cancellation of their meeting against Utah, Washington State also had their meeting against BYU canceled. The meeting was scheduled for Saturday, January 22 but was canceled “due to COVID-19 protocols within the WSU program”

This is BYU’s first cancellation of the year.

Seattle and Pacific Lutheran

The Seattle University Division I and Pacific Lutheran University Division III meeting scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 22, has been canceled. No specific announcement was made to give the reasoning.

Seattle has withdrawn from their scheduled January 15 meeting in Idaho.due to COVID-19 protocols”. Pacific Lutheran has had its scheduled Jan. 15 meeting against Willamette postponed, but is still scheduled to face George Fox University on Friday, Jan. 21.
