Cécile Morud – Jamestown Sun

Cécile Morud, 95, died in her sleep early on May 25, 2022 at SMP Health-Ave Maria. Although healthy in many ways, she suffered her later years with Alzheimer’s disease.

Cécile was born on March 30, 1927, on the family farm, daughter of Emily and Victor Nelson. Cécile was the youngest of six children. She was confirmed on July 17, 1927, at Lunde Lutheran Church in Wolford, North Dakota. After graduating from Cando High School, Cécile attended and graduated from the New York Hairdressing Academy in Fargo, North Dakota, where she graduated on April 28, 1947. It was at Fargo that she met the love of his life, Leslie Morud. They were married on July 10, 1947 in Cando, North Dakota. They lived in Rolla, North Dakota for four years before moving to Jamestown, North Dakota. Cécile and Les had eight children, a boy and seven girls.

Cécile worked at David’s House of Beauty and taught at the Town and Country School of Hair Design for over 60 years. Mom and Dad were active members of the Elks, Elkettes, American Legion, Legion Auxillary, Dance Club, and Jaycees.

Ceil loved people and was a dynamic host and entertainer, making sure everyone was engaged and having fun. She liked holidays because they were the occasion for a family reunion. The table was set with great detail and the appetizers were a mix of standards like the clam dip and the brand new culinary idea to welcome everyone home. Mom was a great cook, her buns and fudge were the “best”! She grew up on a farm and learned early on that “everything is better with butter and cream. She was the life of the party who will be sorely missed.

The annual family vacation was amazing whether it was a week at Lake Killarney Manitoba or Lake Bemidji watching the Vikings summer training mum made the vacation memorable for all by cooking all meals in the cabin and watching the kids fish from the shore and swim in the lake.

Ceil was a member of Trinity Lutheran for 65 years. Her faith and her church were very important to her.

Later in life she made trips to California, Florida, Arizona, Hawaii, Sweden, Ireland, Mexico and Washington DC. A memorable trip was a visit to the home of Lawrence Welk and the DC office of Senators Milton Young and Mark Andrews.

Cécile is survived by her children: Rollie (Cathy) Morud, Bemidji; Debbie (Charles) Bartz, Wimbledon; Pam (Terry) Hansen, Jamestown; Margo (Keith) Brisben, Eaton, Colorado; Monica Morud, Fargo; and Robin (Kurt) Barkus, Jamestown; 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Cécile was predeceased by her parents; beloved husband, Leslie; daughter Melissa; two brothers, Verner and Leland; three sisters, Ethel, Vera and Aurora; and a stillborn daughter Julie Jane.

The family would like to thank the staff at SMP Health-Ave Maria for the wonderful care provided to Mom.
